Breathe

By Simran Kaur

Oil on Canvas 18"x 24"

‘Breathe’ is an oil painting illustrating the effects of temperature and hypoxia on the metabolism of Southern Ontario fish. Graham Scott and his team are investigating whether these fish will be able to adapt to climate change in the future. In my painting, I portrayed fish swimming through the water peacefully, as they are unaware of the effects that climate change will have on them. This tranquility is further symbolized through the use of blue for the water. The thermometer represents the measurement of temperature and the lack of oxygen molecules show they are experiencing a form of hypoxia. The hints of fog covering areas of the painting also depict the mysteries of climate change that still need to be uncovered.
