Clogged

By Manda Novokmet

Pencil Crayons on Paper 8"x 11"

“Clogged” is inspired by “The Association Between Chronic Exposure to Traffic-Related Air Pollution and Ischemic Heart Disease” (Bernardo S Beckerman et al. J Toxicol Environ Health A. 2012). The traffic that congests the roads themselves emits a variety of toxins that can have profound health effects. This piece is an attempt to physically demonstrate the parallel that can be made between the clogged roads within it and the clogged arteries that they lead into. This piece is a dark but necessary rendering of traffic directly clogging arteries, filling them without abandon. This blatantly unavoidable correlation that is almost invisible in day to day life is made visible through the cars being funneled into the heart as well as through the increasing evidence linking traffic-related air pollution to Ischemic heart disease, as can be seen in the cited article.
